Yes, you’re heading to the Bay of Islands tomorrow, but Auckland has its own islands nearby with their own fascinating histories. Waiheke Island, only 40 minutes away by ferry, has galleries, gourmet food, great beaches, even a winery and a brewery. Jump on a bike and explore the countryside, or just take it easy away from the city bustle.
The morning is filled with the best of Auckland as you explore the city, its stunning harbour, and charming inner suburbs such as historic Parnell. The afternoon is yours to roam.Daily :
Auckland – Bay of Islands
Head north to the lovely Bay of Islands, a sub-tropical paradise comprised of turquoise waters, secluded coves and beaches, a lush hinterland, and, of course, 144 islands. There’s important history here, too. The treaty between Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown was signed at Waitangi in 1840. In the late afternoon, get your sea legs ready for a sunset cruise on a Tall Ship through this magnificent coastal region.

Bay of Islands
Today is your chance to explore the Bay of Islands at your own pace. Optional trips include visiting Cape Reinga, the furthest north you can go by land in New Zealand. Its whitewashed lighthouse is a Kiwi icon. Another option is a cruise to the Hole in the Rock, a natural archway beneath the tall cliffs of Piercy Island off Cape Brett. If conditions allow, you can sail through it. And keep an eye out for dolphins and whales as you cruise.Daily :
Bay of Islands - Rotorua
Swap the tang of the sea for the unmistakable aroma of Rotorua, New Zealand’s thermal wonderland. That’s the smell of hydrogen sulphide from the masses of geothermal activity that makes Rotorua a place apart. Think erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools and steaming sulphur terraces. The town is also the centre of Maori culture in New Zealand, which is ever-present in Rotorua.

Make like a real Kiwi – grab a bottle or can of Lemon & Paeroa, buy a chocolate fish and a Pinky, and have yourself an instant afternoon pick-me-up (for sweet tooths only).
A full day to explore Rotorua’s distinctive character, or to discover a little more of the North Island’s appeal. Famously, New Zealand was the setting for the monumental Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and its follow up The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, so why not visit the Hobbiton movie set? Just an hour from Rotorua you can be in Middle-earth, with its Hobbit holes (all 44 of them), mill, and the famous Green Dragon Inn. Tonight you’ll celebrate all things Maori with a concert and hangi – a traditional Polynesian feast cooked in underground pits.Daily :
Rotorua – Auckland
Today, you’ll return to beautiful Auckland. And tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow passengers, and new-found friends.
